Which background for what?
The short version: match the background to where the photo will live and what you want it to say. These six cover nearly everyone.
LinkedIn profile
Pick: blurred office or light studio
The office says "at work" without a word; light studio keeps your face crisp in LinkedIn's small circle. Both look at home next to the other profiles in your feed.
CV and job applications
Pick: white, off-white or light grey
Plain and light. Recruiters scan quickly, the photo sits next to text, and a clean background prints and photocopies without turning muddy.
Team and company pages
Pick: one background for everyone
Consistency matters more than the choice itself. One office or one studio colour across the whole team reads as one organisation. Teams can also use their own brand colour or image.
Executive, press and speaker bios
Pick: dark studio or black-and-white
Charcoal, black or a classic black-and-white portrait carries weight on a press page, a board profile or a conference programme.
Approachable and creative roles
Pick: outdoor, colour or Copenhagen street
Greenery, a coastal light or a soft colour feels warm and personal – good for therapists, coaches, authors, designers and founders.
Print and signage
Pick: light studio or a solid colour
For name badges, brochures and office walls a solid, even background crops cleanly at any size and matches printed materials.

What makes a good headshot background
Whatever you pick, the same five rules decide whether the background helps or hurts.
- Nothing competes with your face. Plain or softly blurred. If a viewer notices the background first, it is the wrong background.
- Contrast with your hair and clothes. Dark hair on charcoal and a white shirt on white both disappear. Pick a background a few shades away from what you wear.
- Even light, no shadows. A studio-lit background has no hot spots or dark corners, which is why it crops cleanly to a circle or a square.
- Consistency across a team. On a team page, one background for everyone beats ten great individual choices.
- Match the platform. LinkedIn and company pages lean office and light studio; press kits lean dark and black-and-white; a CV stays plain.

Which background colour is best?
For most people a light neutral – white, off-white or light grey – is the safest, and navy or charcoal the most authoritative. Soft colours like sage, misty blue and terracotta work when they sit a few shades away from your clothes and skin tone. Avoid strong, saturated colours unless they are your brand's.
